The University of Georgia (UGA) Scientific Illustration Program is renowned for its excellence in combining artistry with scientific accuracy. One notable aspect of the program is its collaboration with the UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium in Savannah, GA.
Located on Skidaway Island, just outside of Savannah, the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium serves as a hub for marine research, education, and outreach. The center is dedicated to advancing our understanding of coastal ecosystems and promoting environmental stewardship through innovative research and educational programs.
I have visited on occasion for their open house program and artists' grant events (with local artist Kip Bradley). Honorable mention for the oyster roasts which I have not been able to attend yet!
Through the UGA Scientific Illustration Program's partnership with the UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, students have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity of Georgia's coastal environments. Under the guidance of experienced faculty and researchers, students engage in hands-on learning experiences that integrate art and science in meaningful ways.
By working directly with scientists, educators, and conservationists at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium, students gain valuable insights into the research process and the importance of effective science communication. For example, scientific illustration and the whale mandible. Scientific illustration students at UGA assisted professor Gene Wright with creating the replica at the aquarium while I was in undergrad. This replica serves as a tangible reminder of the awe-inspiring creatures and the importance of marine conservation efforts.
Further developing the partnership between the groups would not only enrich the educational experience of the students but also contribute to the broader mission of the UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant (to promote ocean literacy and environmental stewardship). Through their artwork, students play a vital role in raising awareness about the importance of coastal conservation and inspiring action to protect these precious ecosystems for future generations.
I am interested in seeing future collaboration between scientific illustrators (especially myself!) and the aquarium.
