Art has a unique way of capturing the essence of human emotions and memories. Recently, I had the honor of painting a mural on a utility box dedicated to Mrs. Leisa Zoller. This experience was not merely about painting; it was a heartfelt celebration of a life well-lived and a beacon of hope and comfort.
The Journey Begins: Concept and Design
Every mural starts with a vision. For this project, the GACC tennis team chose Leisa’s favorite flowers to honor the memory of their dear friend. The colors were chosen not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their emotional significance. Vibrant hues symbolized the joy she spread, while softer shades reflected the peace and serenity she embodied.
The Painting Process: A Week of Reflection and Creation
Day 1: Preparation and Priming & Outlining the Design
The GACC managers kindly prepped the box by cleaning the surface and applying a base coat of primer to ensure the mural's longevity. With the base coat dry, I began outlining the mural with charcoal. As I worked, I reflected on the initial idea and felt a sense of anticipation for the days ahead.
Day 2-6: Bringing Color to Life
Using direct-to-metal paint ensured durability and vibrancy, especially on surfaces like utility boxes. This type of paint adheres seamlessly to metal, providing a smooth and long-lasting finish that resists chipping, peeling, and fading. It is specifically formulated to withstand harsh weather conditions, making it ideal for outdoor artwork. The application process is straightforward, often requiring minimal surface preparation and priming. The paint brought the mural to life with vivid colors and intricate details, ensuring it remained a vibrant and enduring tribute to its subject.
Day 7: Details, Final Touches, and Reflection
The final touches are what bring a piece to life. This day was dedicated to adding intricate details, highlights, and shadows. By the end of the day, the mural stood as a colorful testament to Leisa’s life and legacy. Sealing the mural with a protective coat ensured it would withstand the elements and remain a source of inspiration for years to come. The mural is not just a piece of art but a community’s collective memory and love.
A Beacon of Hope: Finding Comfort in Art
Creating this mural was a healing journey for me and, I hope, for the community as well. Art has the power to transcend words and touch hearts in ways that are both profound and subtle. It serves as a reminder that even in our grief, we can find beauty and hope.
The love of a departed loved one is like the roots of a tree, deeply embedded in the soil of our hearts. Even in their absence, their love nourishes us, bringing us friends and family closer. As we find new ways to remember and honor them, our shared memories and love bloom like flowers in a vibrant garden, creating a tapestry of connection and resilience that continues to flourish with each passing season.
To those who are mourning, know that it’s okay to feel the weight of your loss. But I hope you can find lightness in the vivid snapshots of laughter-filled days and moments of joy. Each time you pass by this mural, let it remind you of the joy and love Leisa brought into the world. Let it inspire you to carry forward her legacy through acts of kindness and moments of joy.
